DUVALL – The Cedarcrest soccer team has a fully stocked roster of 15 returning players this year.
Included in this list are Ben Frey, a senior, and Tommy Felts, a junior, who were both named honorable mention for the KingCo league last year, along with Matt Mundy, a junior, who made second-team KingCo last year and scored seven goals for the season. Felts had five goals for the season.
Devin Bazemore and Justin Harrold return as seniors. The rest of the team is comprised of eight juniors and two sophomores.
“With so many returning players, we feel that as a team it would be a disappointment if we don’t make playoffs in KingCo 3A,” Coach Dan Armstrong said.
Last year, the Red Wolves had a chance to go into the playoffs before their last game against Mount Si High School. But they lost and missed qualifying for the district playoffs by one game. They ended their season with a fourth-place finish in the KingCo Valley Division.
Armstrong said the team plans to finish the KingCo season this year with a winning record, and they will also be ready to compete for the KingCo Valley Division title.
“Our biggest challenge will be playing competition without being overlooked like last year,” Armstrong said. “Teams know we’re for real now.”
They began the season last weekend with two, non-league games against a couple of 4A Spokane schools. The Red Wolves battled in overtime against University High School, but lost 2-1. Their second game was against Central Valley. Cedarcrest lost that game, too, 1-0.
“The game was hard-fought and could have gone either way but for a fantastic save by the CV keeper to preserve the win for his team,” said Armstrong.
Armstrong said that despite the losses, he was very happy with the team’s effort.
“In the words of one coach, we were much better than expected and impressive for a school our size,” Armstrong said.
The team played Nathan Hale last Tuesday with a mixed varsity/junior-varsity squad, shutting them out 5-0.
Frey scored two goals and Mundy, Benedict and Bazemore each scored one.
The Wolves played their first league game against Liberty on Friday losing 3-2. Mundy and Frey each scored goals.
