Eagles win bird battle

On Jan. 14 the Snoqualmie Middle School Eagles eighth-grade varsity girls’ basketball team defeated the Chief Kanim Hawks in the annual “Battle of the Birds.” The Eagles jumped out to a 13-2 lead on the strength of Alisha Larion’s post play and point guard Hannah Hames’ assists. Chief Kanim weathered the early storm, coming back to tie. The game then became a see-saw battle with each team grabbing momentum, making runs and taking the lead. In the second half, the Eagles relied on the strong inside presence of Katelyn Walker, who came back from early foul trouble to play smart defense. Guard Katie Brett played solid throughout, continually harassing the Hawks’ point guard. Offensively she played her best game of the season as well, providing a much needed lift. On the boards, Sarah Hilleary and Danae Englund were solid. From the perimeter, Kelsey Wise made some key steals while Lindsey Myers made fine passes down low. In the end, it was Snoqualmie coming out on top, thus ending a season of up and downs on a positive note. Award winners at the end-of-the-season party included Larion and Walker as co-Most Valuable Players; Katie Brett, Most Inspirational and Danae Englund as Most Improved. Special recognition also went to managers Cailee Olson, Nicole Soroka and Vivian Yang.
