`Cats trounce Issaquah

Once again the Mount Si Wildcat wrestling team showed
its level of skill and depth as it defeated the Issaquah Indians
45-22. The win moved them one step closer to a perfect regular
season and the KingCo championship.
In the 103-pound class, Jason Rothgeb faced the Indians’
Brian Leslie, losing by pin with 21 seconds left in the first round.
Jordan Prior dominated the 112-pound class with a 16-1 win over
Nate Dybevik. In the 119-pound class, Kyle Cunningham pinned the
Indians’ Eric Kostenbauder with 16 seconds in the second round.
The pin gave the Wildcats an 11-6 lead.
Issaquah struck back in the 125-pound class as
Nick Martindale lost by decision to the Indians’ Justin Siems. The
match could have gone either way, but a call by the referee of a
reversal and two-point near fall late in the round gave the match to
Siems 10-7.
The Indians also won the 130-pound class by major decision
as Jon Emerson was pitted against Issaquah’s Jeff Smith. Smith
dominated the match, eventually winning 11-0.
Jeff Stone turned it around for the `Cats with an 11-7 win in
the 135-pound class over Jon Katayama. Chad Mills
followed his teammate’s lead and pinned the Indians’ Nate Freeburg
with 44 seconds left in second round to win the 140-pound class.
Hiram Tame defeated his opponent, Chris Long, in the
145-pound class to notch more points for the Wildcats. In the
152-pound class, veteran David Crotts was pinned by the Indians’
Levi Miller. Miller, who also has several years of varsity
experience under his belt, took the beleaguered Crotts to the mat with
1:19 left in the second round.
The Indians’ continued their pressure in one of the best
matches of the night between the Wildcat’s Bobby Taylor and
Travis Johnson. Taylor scored first on a technical by Johnson. Late in
the first round, the referee gave both wrestlers points for stalling, a
rare move by any referee.
In the second round, Johnson started from the bottom
and quickly escaped, but Taylor took him to the mat again, then
scored a two-point near fall. Johnson came back with a reverse and
a two-point near fall of his own.
In the third, Taylor started down and quickly escaped to
take a one-point lead. But with the clock ticking by, Johnson shot
and took Taylor to the mat, good enough for the lead and the win.
Jed McDaniels wasted no time in racking up points in
the 171-pound class, winning by a score of 10-2 and giving the
Wildcats a 27-22 lead. Brad Davis pinned his opponent,
Kody Kump, with 34 seconds left in the first round for the Wildcats,
and both Dylan Seubert and Brad Connor did the same,
recording pins in the first round.
