‘Cats overcome Red Wolves

On the back of the Mount Si Wildcats’ volleyball T-shirts there are five character traits that describe the team: Focus, Attitude, Intensity, Toughness and Heart.

The girls’ varsity team displayed all of those traits in its big KingCo 3A volleyball win over their Valley rival Cedarcrest last Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Mount Si High School.

Mount Si won three games to one, losing 15-8 and winning 15-5, 15-10 and 15-11 in a very entertaining contest that had the fans – particularly those from Mount Si – in it from the start.

“We played out of our minds, and you know what, that’s what we’re made of. I said, ‘We needed something offensively in order to win some matches,’ and they did it tonight. I’m very proud of them,” said an elated Mount Si coach Bonnie Foote. The Wildcats got revenge on the Red Wolves after being defeated earlier in the year at Cedarcrest High School.

The match opened with the Red Wolves getting the early lead in game one behind the excellent play of senior Megan Townsend.

The Wildcats’ Kristina Turple answered the Cedarcrest challenge with back-to-back aces and tied the game at 7-7.

Two points later, it was tied at 8-8, but thanks to continued good play by Townsend and strong serving by sophomore Karly Regalia, Cedarcrest scored seven straight points to close out the first game.

The second game opened with the two teams battling for points early on. Then behind the serving of junior Maggie Olson, the Wildcats broke out to a 9-4 lead, and they cruised from there. Sophomore Marissa Hill’s strong play was key to close out that second game.
