Two Mount Si golfers qualify for state tournament in May

After an extremely strong season for Mount Si Boys Golf, two of the team’s strongest players, Jordan Lau and Drew Warford qualified for state during the league and district tournament on Oct. 10 and 11 at Snohomish Golf Course.

Mount Si’s head coach Brandon Proudfoot was also recognized as one of two golf coaches of the year in KingCo 4A alongside Frank Nemo of Newport High School.

Proudfoot said on the first day of the tournament, Mount Si ended up in third as a team, with players Jordan Lau, Jack Brady and Drew Warford making it to the second day.

“Day two they went out and played well,” Proudfoot said. “Drew and Jordan qualified for state and Jake is an alternate, he will travel with us.”

Only eight entries into the state tournament can be guaranteed for the KingCo 4A district at this point and Mount Si has taken two of them. Eastlake took four of the spots and Newport took the last two. Proudfoot said that more players could make it in during the spring.

“The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) doesn’t come out with their golf allocation so we might have more in spring, but eight is what is guaranteed to us,” he said.

In speaking about the players performance at the district tournament, Proudfoot said that both players were consistent in their shots and, despite a few mistakes, were able to play well enough to qualify for state.

“They just played really solid golf from beginning to end, neither were in big trouble at any point,” he said. “There was a point early in the second round where Drew had a double bogey twice, but we chatted and he straightened it out and ended up making a couple birdies and got his score back down to even par again… Drew ended up second place overall.”

With the season over, the three Mount Si players must keep practicing until the state tournament next May.

Proudfoot said the players will meet one more time to set their plans for off-season practice and then they will be on their own. Only 20 days prior to the tournament can they practice together again.

Proudfoot isn’t worried about the players not practicing during the off-season because off-season practice is part of the reason they were able to make it to state.

“Drew and Jordan and Jake have been playing and practicing on their own for a long time,” he said.

The state golf tournament will be held on May 22 to 24 at Liberty Lake Golf Course in Spokane.
