What’s new: After making it to the 4A playoffs last season, Mount Si will try and repeat the same performance this year.

Despite losing many players to graduation in June, Head Coach Charlie Kinnune said the team is always building up new players to be ready to compete in the tough 4A league.

“We are hit by graduation hard every year, so we reload every year,” Kinnune said. “We feel like we develop our kids so they are ready to compete on Friday night every year.”

Their first game of the season was a decisive win over Juanita with a final score of 42 to 22.

“We came out and competed against the 6th-ranked team in the state in Juanita. They are 3A but they are still highly thought of and respected and we took it too them pretty good,” he said.

In their Sept. 9 game, Mount Si lost to Monroe 19 to 7.

Looking ahead: The season will continue with a series of games against Bothell, Skyline and Issaquah.

“We play really good teams. We have Bothell and after that we have Issaquah who was in the playoffs last year, the second place team. We have Skyline who got second in state. It’s a very difficult deal,” Kinnune said. “This is our third year in KingCo 4A. It’s the most complete, toughest league in the state, there’s no doubt about it.”

One of the team captains, linebacker Justin Lutz, said that the first game of the season gave the team a good feel for the how the rest of the season could play out.

“After last week, the first game, we really found out who we were as a team,” Lutz said. “Monroe is … a good team to play in terms of competitiveness coming into KingCo 4A season. This will be our third year and I feel like the past two seasons have really prepared us. Especially last year after a bounce back from the year before, making the playoffs. This year we are striving to go even further.”

Captain Jack Weidenbach explained the strength of the team lies in its offensive line and solid defense. Many of the seniors who graduated this spring were defensive players, but despite losing those players Mount Si can still put up a solid wall.

“Some of our strength is definitely in our offensively line,” Weidenbach said. “Our entire offensive line is returning and that really helps because they were young guys last year and this year they have so much more experience. Our defense is definitely a huge strong point.”
