The Cascade Conference Cross Country Championships took place at the Blue Heron Golf Course in Carnation on Monday, Oct. 24.

Although the event was delayed due to a flood risk last week and despite the wet conditions, Cedarcrest coach Bruce McDowell said the course was basically in good running shape, and “We are thankful to the management at Blue Heron for allowing Cedarcrest to host the meet at their course.”

Cedarcrest’s girls were favored to win the team title and they did not disappoint. Alicia Krivanek won the individual title, becoming only the fourth runner at the school (after Caitlin Ramirez, Cara Strodel and Logan Orndorf) to win the Cascade Conference individual title.

The girls showed their depth by putting eight girls in the top 14. Alicia was first, Madi Shinn was second, Lily Krueger was fifth and Elsie Dombek was sixth. Each of them was named to the First Team All-Cascade Team. Kelly Hall (9th), Mary Cate Babcock (10th), Kate Vergillo (11th) and Megan Reid (14th) were all named to the Second Team All-Cascade Team. The girls also made this the ninth straight year the team has won the conference title.

The boys team, also claiming the team title, sent six boys into the top 14: Grant Van Valkenburg, third; Ian Fay, fourth; and Ben Benson, fifth; Emmett Klaiber, 10th; Chase Bolin, 12th; and Daniel Murphy, 14th. Van Valkenburg, Fay and Benson were all named to the First Team All-Cascade Team; Klaiber, Bolin and Murphy were named to the Second Team All-Cascade Team. It’s the team’s second conference title in a row, and the fifth in the past seven years.

Athletes of the Meet were Grant Van Valkenburg, Alex Perry, Alicia Krivanek, Elsie Dombek and Greta Klaiber.Cedarcrest won with the lowest score of 34 points. South Whidbey placed second with 77 points.

On Saturday, the team goes to the district championships, at South Whidbey High School.
