For its final regular season meet, the Cedarcrest cross country team competed with Kings and South Whidbey at Kings High School, on an unusual course, 2.4 miles of bark trails through the school campus woods.

“We held out a couple of our injured and sick athletes to try to get them back to healthy before next week’s big meet,” said Coach Bruce McDowell, referring to Thursday’s conference championship at the Blue Heron Golf Course in Carnation.

The girls squad finished first in the meet and finished the season undefeated. Alicia Krivanek was the overall winner with Madi Shinn the runner-up. Six of the girls finished in the top 10, and 10 finished in the first 18.

The boys also finished first in the meet and also finished the season undefeated. Ben Benson was the overall winner with Grant Van Valkenburg the runner-up. Six of the boys finished in the top 10 and 11 were in the first 22.

Athletes of the Meet were Jackson Frank, Brodie Robertson, Jake Ward, Mary Cate Babcock, Ginger Van Valkenburg and Lexie Nelson. All of them ran their best races of the season, McDowell said.

On Thursday, Cedarcrest is hosting the Cascade Conference Cross Country Championships at the Blue Heron Golf Course in Carnation. CHS has hosted many championship track and field meets, but this will be the first championship cross country meet the school has hosted.

The girls race starts at 4 p.m., and the boys race starts a 4:45 p.m.

“The girls are looking to extend a string of eight consecutive conference championships. The boys are the defending champions and have won four of the last six,” McDowell said.
