Strong week for girls' basketball team

It was a real good week for the Mount Si Wildcats girls' basketball team and a trip to the postseason is pretty much assured now as a result.

The Jan. 22 game against the Newport Knights at Newport High School looked to be a very tight contest between two very similar teams. Both teams have a solid core of young players, and not a single senior. It played out exactly as advertised and resulted in a dramatic finish.

With less than 20 seconds left in the game and the Knights attempting to run out the clock with a two-point 51-49 lead, Mount Si's Jordyn Wilson stole the ball and fed it to fellow sophomore teammate Caitie Richards, who promptly hit a three-pointer to give the Wildcats the lead. Newport then tried to get the ball to their top player, Betsy Kingma, but Mount Si's defense stood tall and forced other Knights into play. Newport had two chances for the win, but neither went in and the Wildcats picked up another huge road win against a top team in the league with a 52-51 victory.

Richards finished with 14 points, while Meaghan Cavanaugh added 11 and Madison Yakaboski popped in 10 to help the winning cause. Wilson had four steals, including the fateful one at the end that set up the great Mount Si finish.
