The Mount Si Wildcat baseball team survived a little rain to get their first action of the 2007 season March 9 at Sumner. The team won both (mini) games of their jamboree with Sumner and River Ridge.
In game one, Ian Atkinson drove in three runs and Zack Robinson added two hits and two RBIs as the Wildcats rolled 11-3 over the hosts from Pierce County. Mount Si's bats came alive with an 11-hit effort.
The second game was much tighter, despite solid pitching from the Wildcat pitchers. Blake Hepner picked up a pair of hits and drove in a run as Mount Si beat River Ridge 7-6. Wildcat pitching held River Ridge to just three hits in the contest. Both games lasted three innings and do not count in the standings.
"I thought we swung the bats pretty well once the guys got focused and settled down. They were pretty excited to be finally playing a game. We have only been on a baseball field twice in the last two weeks because of the weather. They were glad to be out of the gym and getting into a competitive atmosphere," said Mount Si coach Gary McGregor by e-mail to the Valley Record.
McGregor also added that his team did a nice job of representing the Valley at this event in the eyes of others participating in it.
"We got a very nice compliment from both coaches and from the home-plate umpire. Both coaches were impressed with our discipline on defense and at the plate. The plate umpire said that we had a good group of players, he liked the way we were fundamentally playing the game," said McGregor.
