Wildcats fall to Newport
The Wednesday, Dec. 19 girls' basketball game between the Mount Si Wildcats and Newport Knights was expected to be a very entertaining battle, and the two teams lived up to that. However, the experience of the Knights proved to be the deciding factor down the stretch as they took advantage of key Mount Si turnovers in a 68-61 win.
"It was a pretty well-played game on both ends of the floor. I thought they were very aggressive and that kind of put us on our heels there for a while and it took us a while to adjust to it," said Newport coach Travis Whitaker.
The game opened up well for the Wildcats, as they took the early lead. They got to 11-5 before the Knights responded to make it close. It stayed this way into halftime, where Newport led 32-29. The Knights tried to pull away in the third, but Mount Si responded to that challenge fairly quickly and continued to keep the game close. However, Newport pulled away in the fourth and took control for good.
