8th Grade Football

Hawks still looking

The Chief Kanim 8th grade football team hosted a scrappy

Lochburn Middle School squad on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The Hawks had trouble moving the ball in the first half of the

game and found themselves down by19-0 at halftime. In the second half,

Chief Kanim's defense shut down Lochburn, but unfortunately the offense

couldn't move the ball. The final score remained 19-0, and the Hawks are

still looking for their first victory.

Mike Lindor played extremely well, blocking a punt and leading

the team with eight tackles, while Alex VanOveren had a fumble

recovery with two tackles. Other leading tacklers were Gary Conner with six,

Trevor Sleeman and Eric McCammon with five each, and Brad Trombley,

Kris Bostic and Zach Kramer with four each. Phil Collins had some great

long snaps and Bostic got off some excellent punts.

Eagles chuck Woodbrook

The 8th grade Eagles have landed! In the true tradition of "no guts,

no glory," the SMS football team played with pride and emotion, beating

the Wildcats from Woodbrook, Tacoma, 18-13.

An Alex Smart pass to Josh Harris resulted in the game winning

touchdown, with just 43 ticks left on the clock. Harris and Smart also

crossed the goal line for two other touchdowns.

With the defensive front of Kyle Davis, Brett Schneider, Justin

Wright and Nathan Goldsmith shutting down the middle, and Curt Davis, Eric

Meuli and Smart containing the outside, the Eagles shut out the Wildcats in

the second half. It was a great team win.

The 8th grade Wildcats are coached by Brad Hilliard and

John Appelgate.

8th Grade Volleyball

Lady Eagles come out winners

On Monday, Oct. 4, and by scores of 15-1, 10-15 and 15-15, the

Eagles beat the visiting team from Mercer Island and improved their record to

a perfect 5-0.

After winning the first game on the consistent serving of Kristen

Berndt, the Eagles lost the second game 10-15, although Kelly Fletcher

provided leadership as captain and also served well. In the third and final

game, Robin Trombley passed well at the setter position, and the Lady

Eagles went on to victory.

Wednesday night's "Battle of the Birds" can be summed this way:

what a battle! Played at Mount Si High School, the Lady Eagles defeated

arch rival Chief Kanim in three hard-fought games by scores of 15-9, 5-15 and

15-10. Everyone on the squad contributed to put the team record at 4-0. The

Lady Eagles are coached by Justin Talmadge.
