The Snoqualmie Sounders Special Olympics Team (pictured above) traveled to Fort Lewis for the Washington State Special Olympics Summer Games on June 2 and 3.

The Sounders competed in the Masters Division, ages 16 and up, against teams from Everett, Olympia and Bonney Lake. In the game that secured their gold-medal win, the Sounders took an early 4-0 lead over the Olympia Kickers on goals by Michael Lawrence, Fred Perazzo, Jessica Metzger and Kathy Lems. The Kickers battled back to bring the score to 4-3 before Anna Ennaro scored for the Sounders and closed out the 5-3 victory.

The team was led by leading scorer and most valuable player Kaila Stevens-Wadja who scored seven goals and assisted on at least 10 others.

The other members of the team who also made great contributions to the success of the team were A.J. Carstens, Charlie Whitaker, Sandra Guthrie and Francine Holland. The Sounders are coached by Greg and Whitney Chelgren.

The Snoqualmie Valley Lions (at right), ages 8 to 15, earned the silver medal at the summer games. The Lions competed in the Juniors Division against teams from Renton and Federal Way and won three out of five games. Team members included Jessica Kitz, Susie Pearson, Bob Pearson, Melissa Padwick, Andrew Galloway, Greg Jorgensen, Rachel Smithrid, Eva Kukahiki and Nycolle Benham.
