SNOQUALMIE - For every year that Mount Si's head wrestling coach has coached in Kingco 3A he has completed his season by being named Coach of the Year by his peers. This year was no exception.
Jeff Newcomer, who led his team to a second-place finish in dual meet action this season, was named Co-Coach of the Year along with Mercer Island's Paul Jackson.
Newcomer had won the same title the previous two years while coaching at Cedarcrest, where last year, he led the Red Wolves to a third in state finish.
"I was a little surprised just because I had won it before," said Newcomer. "I figured Paul would win, but I feel honored to be recognized by my peers. I remember wrestling at camps and he [Jackson] was there as a coach then for Mercer Island.
Eric Pedeferri, two-time Kingco champ and second-in- state wrestler, was named Assistant Coach of the Year, working under Art Kuehn at Cedarcrest.
"I used to talk to Eric at matches and got to know him when I was helping at Mount Si," said Newcomer. "He is always a class act and really deserved the honor."
Pedeferri began his coaching career this season in addition to being a full-time firefighter with the Bellevue Fire Department.
