The Mount Si Wildcats boys' hoops team overcame the snowy conditions and picked up a road win to open their season last Friday night.
Behind 18 points from senior Kyle Meuli, the Wildcats defeated the Redmond Mustangs 65-54 at Redmond High School. Fellow senior Kevin Englund pitched in 16 to pace Mount Si. Senior Sam Newcomb scored 18 and had nine rebounds to lead Redmond, while Rob Meussner added 15 in a losing cause.
The Wildcats and Mustangs had a tight first half, with Redmond having a 32-30 lead at the break. Mount Si outscored the Mustangs 35-22 in the second half to take the victory.
Wildcats seniors Tylor Littlejohn and Ryan Reilly each also added 10 points and six rebounds to the effort. Free throws were key, as Mount Si outscored Redmond 21-7 at the stripe.
Mount Si's home opener is Thursday against Liberty. The Patriots are predicted to be in the lower half of Kingco this season. Liberty only returns one starter from last season: junior forward Ryan Peterson.
In an information sheet e-mailed to the Valley Record, Patriots' Coach Chris Bilanko also said rebounding is an issue with his team coming into this year. This may be an advantage for the Wildcats in this game if Englund, Reilly and Meuli all step up and establish themselves inside. To get this advantage, they will all have to outmuscle Liberty's big senior center Nathaniel Schoot.
Tip off is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Mount Si. Saturday, the Wildcats travel to Bellevue Community College to play Bothell in a nonleague contest, with an early 10:30 a.m. tip time.
