The Wildcats had to wait an extra day to face the Mercer Island Islanders, but after what happened last Saturday night on the island, they probably wished they hadn't waited.

MI's offense had two big innings en-route to a 9-2 blowout at Island Crest Park in a game that was scheduled for last Friday, but was postponed a day due to rain.

Islanders coach Doug Williams was pleased with his team's performance. "Lots of excitement. Lots of positive energy out there today, and we did swing the bats," said Williams.

Wildcat coach Gary McGregor also praised MI. "They swung the bats well. They were well schooled, well disciplined, well coached and they whooped us," McGregor said.

It was a balanced attack for the Islanders as they manufactured 13 hits. Leading the way was freshman Matt Boyd, who picked up three hits including a double.

"He's poised to get much better as he gains more experience. It was my second start, so I'm just getting used to the pitching and it's nice and I like it," Boyd said.

Look for this freshman to make an impact in Kingco 3A over the next few years. He scored two runs and drove in two runs.

Cullen Russell and Robbie Philbrick each added two hits for MI.

The Islanders broke out the bats early, scoring three runs in the second inning off Wildcats' starting pitcher Jake Handy. Mount Si got close in the third. Derek Aldrich doubled with one out, then Atkinson singled to advance Aldrich to third base. A balk by MI pitcher Joseph Bassetti allowed Aldrich to score from third for the Wildcats' first run. Alexander then singled to score Atkinson and it was 3-2 MI. Ryan Utesch then hit a fly out deep to left field for the third out.

The Islanders scored four more runs in the fourth off Handy and relief pitcher Castagno. Doubles by Philbrick and Russell keyed the outburst.

MI added a run each in the fifth and sixth innings and closed it out.

Mount Si remained in front of the Islanders for the sixth and final Kingco playoff spot despite the loss, but the Wildcats will have to get it done this week to breathe easier. Mount Si is home against Issaquah Wednesday then they travel to Bannerwood Park in Bellevue to play Interlake Friday. First pitch for both contests is at 4 p.m. Reeves knows what needs to be done. "Right now, I just think we need to make the playoffs. I mean, we've got to get a win, we've got to beat Interlake this week," Reeves said.
