The Mount Si boys' soccer team used a strong team effort to open the 2007 season on the right foot with a 3-1 win over the Mercer Island Islanders March 13.

"This was a team effort tonight," said Mount Si coach Darren Brown. "I'm really proud of these boys, the way they fought. This was a state playoff team we faced and it's a pretty good way to start the season."

Mercer Island opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a goal from forward Leandro Kimura, who fired it in off the crossbar from close range past the new Wildcat goalkeeper, junior Ian Fewing. Kimura celebrated the goal but that celebration was short-lived thanks to Mount Si's top offensive threat.

Senior Gibson Bardsley, in the 11th minute, fired a free kick at the net so hard it deflected off Islander goalie Forrest Marowicz into the back of the net and the game was tied 1-1, a score that lasted into halftime.

The defense, and especially Fewing's backup goalie, sophomore Cody Tipton, came up big in the second half. That strong defense helped create the go-ahead goal for Mount Si. In the 54th minute, Javier Ponce de Leon fired a shot past Marowicz into an empty net to put the Wildcats up 2-1.
