Wildcats kick off season with intersquad game
The Mount Si Wildcat football program kicked off the 2007 season last Saturday with the annual Red-White intrasquad scrimmage, and based on how the team looked, Mount Si appears to be in position to contend this season for another trip to state.
In the Red-White game, big plays by the Red side propelled them to a 21-0 victory.
The Red team scored touchdowns on a pair of big plays in the first half: one, a long 51-yard run on fourth down by Sean Snead to go up 8-0, then on the next offensive possession, Parker Griffin caught a pass from Tyson Riley and took it in from around 43 yards out for a 15-0 Red lead. Jake Handy wrapped things up with a score late in the game.
Wildcat coach Charlie Kinnune liked what he saw, but added there's still work to do. "We have to work on our consistency. We have to consistently catch the ball. Our quarterbacks, both quarterbacks played very well today. We put the ball in the hand; the Red squad with Frank (McLaughlin) and Parker Griffin, they caught the ball and we have to be able to do that. We saw some really good running back action by Sean Snead, by Jake Handy and by Ryan Frazier. We saw some decent blocking by our fullbacks in (Brandon) Smith and (Zach) Kirchmeyer, and so I think we're going to be able to run the ball, but we're going to have to be able to consistently be diverse on offense and last year we could be predictable we can't be like that. We have to be a little bit unpredictable and more diverse," Kinnune said.
The event also featured scrimmages involving the freshman and sophomore teams. In the freshman scrimmage, the players looked excellent on both sides, and it appears that team will have a couple of good running backs this season. In the freshman vs. sophomore scrimmage, the sophomore team won.
Mount Si opens the season at Sammamish Friday at 7:30, then comes home to start the home schedule with a biggie against Bellevue September 7, also at 7:30.
