Wildcat golf off to sizzling start

It has been a strong start for the Mount Si High School boys’ golf team, as they opened the season with four victories.

Play got underway Sunday, Aug. 31, as the Wildcats defeated Mercer Island and Newport in their preseason jamboree. Wildcat junior Bradley Harrelson had the best score of the day, shooting a 34 on the nine-hole Mount Si Golf Course layout. Jack Kelly shot a 36 and Matt Prewett a 37 to pace the Mount Si efforts.

The Wildcats and Knights met again on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Once again, the Wildcats brought home a victory. Team scores were 193-205 in favor of Mount Si. Harrelson tore up the nine-hole Mount Si layout to the tune of a 32. Kelly and Luke Dietsch each carded a 37 to pace the Wildcats. Brad Binder fired a 37 of his own to lead the Knights.

Last Tuesday, Sept. 9, Mount Si made short work of Juanita, 187-221. Kelly grabbed medalist honors with the low round of the day; he shot 36. Five Wildcats, Kelly, Dietsch, Harrelson, Mike Rutledge and Brandon Snyder, shot rounds under 40. The Rebels’ low score was a 42, by Colton Kleis.

On Wednesday, Sept. 10, Mount Si was dominant yet again, this time easily defeating Liberty, 179-219. Rutledge carded a 32 to take the medalist spot, and the senior led a group of six Wildcats who all fired rounds under 40. Kelly, Harrelson, Prewett, Dietsch and Bryce Karalus joined Rutledge in that excellent showing. All eight Mount Si golfers’ scores were better than the leading Patriot golfers, Andrew Pittman and Nick Stevens, who both shot rounds of 43. Snyder shot a 41 and Cooper Helm brought in a round of 40 to round out the Wildcat efforts.

In junior varsity action, Sam Joselyn had a good week last week, carding rounds of 45 (against Juanita) and 43 (against Liberty). Mitchell Gardunia fired a 50 in the match against the Rebels, while Jack Isen shot a 48 against the Patriots.

Considering that many golfers are having excellent starts to the season, it looks like Mount Si may be developing a strong case to be a state title contender in next spring’s state tournament.
