Cedarcrest XC sends nine girls runners, one boy to state

November 2, 2012 · 2:38 PM

Last Saturday, Oct. 27, the Cedarcrest Cross-country squad competed at the district championships held at Lakewood High School.

Rain made the course a bit sloppy, but both Red Wolves runner teams did well, with the girls earning a sixth straight ticket to state by finishing third.

It was a top notch performance, head coach Bruce McClellan said. The front trio of Olivia Waterman (seventh), Amelia Anderson (10th) and Diana Carr (12th) were solid, while Megan Brimley (30th), Molly Hammontree (32nd), Cassidy Krawiec (40th) and Madison Smith (42nd) all had their best, or very nearly best, races of the season.

The boys had a mixture of good performances by some and tough days by others.

"With the strength of our district, it takes more than some good performances to make it to state," McClellan stated in an e-mail. The boys finished fifth overall; they needed third, though, to earn a team ticket.

Logan Orndorf continued his outstanding season by finishing fourth and qualified for his third state meet.  Quinn Radbourne took 19th place, just four places out of qualifying for state as an individual.

"If we gave a "most improved" award (which we don't), it would probably go to Jonathan Gunderson.  From his frosh year of running mid 19's to his soph year of running mid 18's, Jonathan is now running mid 17's and today ran as our number four," McClellan stated.

We were hoping to extend the boys state meet streak but it wasn't meant to be," he added "Unfortunately, it is the end of an XC career for our two senior boys, Cody Wanichek and Dominic Dams."

Cedarcrest will return nine of its top eleven boys runners in 2013.

"I am sure that the boys will put in the work to try to start a new streak next year," the coach said.

Cedarcrest heads to the state championships in Pasco with a squad of nine girls and one boy.

The girls will be in the running for a trophy (top four) with about five or six other teams. Orndorf will be trying to make the podium (top 16) and improve upon his 12th place finish from last year.
