Letter: Vibrant downtown

It is well known that a healthy and vibrant downtown boosts the economic health and quality of life in a community. It incubates small businesses, creates jobs, promotes property values and provides a wide range of options for goods and services, ultimately attracting a wide range of customers.

A healthy downtown is a symbol of community pride. Early in 2009, downtown North Bend business owners and the city came together to discuss economic development and revitalization of downtown North Bend. The goal was to host a centennial event that would showcase the downtown businesses, build community awareness of our downtown, grow local support and bring downtown North Bend alive.

The North Bend Block Party achieved these goals and more! This was a community event, hosted by the community, for the community. With a little sun and warm temperatures, North Bend came out to play!

The participating downtown businesses hosted their events and activities with pride and zest, making each activity a total success. The feedback I heard after the event from the business community was fabulous and all positive. Most business owners echoed the sentiment that sales were up and the exposure was fantastic. Emerald City Smoothie had its second best day ever (the first was opening day). Pro Guiding Service said sales were twice as high as a normal Saturday. North Bend Bar and Grill said “We love it, business was great.” Rattlesnake Lake Cycle Shop, Renaissance Pet Boutique and Birches Habitat all felt the exposure was fabulous and Cascadia Spa and Stoves also had a wonderful business day.

A quote I have always enjoyed, and this week it seems appropriate, is “Live for today….plan for tomorrow….and throw a party to celebrate!”
