Letters | Remembering LCpl Eric Ward with a poem, three years after his death

February 20, 2013 · 4:17 PM

When eagles soar high in the sky

I always pause to wonder why

God gave these birds the strength and grace

To so inspire our human race

Was God's plan to remind us all

Not to weep when warriors fall?

Because they'll get to soar again

As mighty eagles in the wind

This poem was inspired by Marine LCpl Eric Ward, who, at the young age of 19, was killed in action on February 21, 2010, while serving as a machine gunner in the Afghanistan war.

Although I never had the chance to meet Eric face to face, his spirit lives on in my heart and I often think of him each time I se an eagle flying around Mount Si, here in the Snoqualmie Valley.

Semper Fi and God bless,

Jim Curtis

North Bend
