Letters | Speak up, check children's phones for unsafe communication
December 21, 2012 · Updated 9:27 AM
Cell phones for minors should be monitored! Parents, please check your kids' texts, emails, photos, Instagram's, Facebook, etc.
The combination of hormones, unsupervised access to apps/internet content, and freedom during middle school can be intoxicating and choices made can have long-term, damaging consequences. The pre-frontal cortex, the "wise owl" of a human being's brain, is not fully formed until you are 25 years old.
Our kids' innocence and reputations are on the line, and I have become aware in the last several weeks of several instances of inappropriate/adult contact, pictures, apps, etc. I am alarmed at the apparent lack of awareness, and/or supervision, and/or communication occurring in our community.
Don't be afraid to speak up and call the parents of your kids' friends and classmates when you see or hear something that is inappropriate.
I believe that it does take a village to raise healthy children, so let's get together!
