Letter: This millenial is optimistic about election choices

Fall is here, pumpkin spice lattes, ballots in our mailboxes, and discouraged sighing about the election sprinkling my Facebook wall. As a millennial, maybe I’m supposed to feel glum about the whole thing—but nothing could be further from the truth.

There’s a lot of work to do in Olympia over the next two years. We need serious people representing the 5th Legislative District, especially on issues surrounding transportation and education. Local races are important: Our “down-ticket” votes might have an even more positive effect on our lives than our choice for president. We’re lucky to have the chance to send Darcy Burner and Jason Ritchie, two local small-business owners, to join fellow small-business-owner Senator Mark Mullet in the Washington State Legislature.

Washington State’s Republicans might, for the most part, still be supporting their jack-o’-lantern of a presidential candidate, who brags about his assaults on women. But Darcy and Jason are thoughtful leaders who will work for us, not out-of-state donors.

That’s why, for the first time as a voter, I’ve volunteered to make phone calls for Darcy and Jason for Legislature. I’m too phone-shy to love calling up strangers (I’ll admit I had to steel myself every time), but when this election is over, I’ll be glad to know I helped send people to Olympia who understand the issues facing people of my—and any—generation.
