Attention should be given to national issues
We are fortunate to have a good local newspaper in a community of this size. The Valley Record does a pretty good job of reporting on local issues, and that's why we've been subscribers for most of our 25 years here. I would have preferred more coverage of the hospital proposed for Issaquah because of the impact it might have on our local hospital, and I believe the site options for the new Snoqualmie library might have been given more attention, but on balance your coverage of local events is fine.
May we offer a suggestion? Because our nation is now faced with so many pressing problems meriting thoughtful consideration and debate, I wonder if it isn't now time to include some discussion of national issues, such as Iraq, social security, health care, education and the increasing size of the deficit. These issues will affect every one of us for generations.
Some will argue that's the task of the major dailies, including The Seattle Times, The Post-Intelligencer and the King County Journal. That's true. We subscribe to two of those, as well. But we really would like to know what people in our community think about these issues. Yes, we can write letters to the dailies, but that's not the same as a conversation with people in our own community.
Giving some attention to state and national issues would probably draw additional reader interest. We could have local residents (and elected officials) present differing points of view, include pro and con columns and conduct and report on local opinion surveys or responses to a "Question of the Week." Perhaps we'll also be encouraging many young people to begin engaging themselves with some of the weighty issues they'll soon inherit.
Thanks for considering these suggestions. Meanwhile, keep those presses running and we'll show our appreciation by continuing to patronize your advertisers. We recognize that without their support we'd have no local paper at all.
