Council makes right decision

I would like to applaud the North Bend City Council for its decision last week to implement the powers of referendum and initiative. This action regarding the obvious groundswell of support for this new process will hopefully move the city of North Bend into an era of compromise and understanding. The past year has seen many ups and downs for the North Bend City Council. It has endured a building moratorium, water problems, a weak economy and countless neighborhood-based issues.
But its acceptance of referendum and initiative should cause everyone to take note that there is room for compromise. With that said, it's time to move forward to solidify the city's direction.
I remember a council member once telling me that if the council listened, there would be no need for referendum and initiative. The fact that it happened demonstrates some lack of communication on both sides.
I would also like to applaud Dave Cook for getting involved. Government can only change if someone like Dave is willing to step up and work toward solutions. Do I see a council run in his future?
