Last week's announcement that Jim Schaffer would be promoted to chief of police for Snoqualmie was great news. I have known Jim since my first days of owning this newspaper and have been thoroughly impressed with his abilities as not only a police officer, but an involved member of the community.

I'm sure there were several candidates in the hopper for this position. To fill the shoes of former chief Don Isley will be a big task. Isley has taken a department small in stature, with limited resources, to one of the best equipped and well-trained units in the state. Nobody can fault Don for his commitment to the safety of this community and his officers. But beyond the budget battles was a chief that was involved in the community with such things as the Snoqualmie Valley Charity Golf Classic, community festivals and Christmas giving.

Jim is the perfect person to carry on many of those same causes and his involvement with the community is evident as he, and wife Lisa, can be seen at pretty much any local happening.

The key to success in the future for the Snoqualmie department will be their continued involvement in the community, their honesty, trustworthiness and professionalism. Jim epitomizes all of these qualities and therefore, makes sense as the new chief.

Congratulations.
