Contenders show promise

I am excited to see that three excellent Democratic candidates are running for the state Legislature in the sprawling 5th District, which includes North Bend, Snoqualmie, Preston and Fall City. All have successfully served as elected officials and have the leadership, experience and dedication to bring effective solutions to the challenges we face in this very special place we call home - the Snoqualmie Valley.

Kathy Huckabay is the candidate for the state Senate. She is currently the mayor of Sammamish. She is sharp, informed and well respected by Republicans and Democrats alike. Kathy understands fiscal responsibility. She was chair of the first finance committee in Sammamish, overseeing the city's budget, which ended with surpluses under her management. A CPA by profession, we could really use Kathy's accounting skills in state government.

Barb deMichelle is running for one of two House of Representatives positions. Barb is extremely well versed on educational issues, having served twice on the Issaquah School Board. As an employee of the King County Department of Transportation, she will bring her expertise in transportation to Olympia. I am impressed with her keen awareness of the importance of preserving the infrastructure of the existing roads in our district.

Jeff Griffin is running for the other House position. You may already know Jeff, whose career in public service spans 20 years. Jeff is a fire captain with the Port of Seattle and has been elected twice to the position of fire commissioner in our district (No. 10). He is an expert on local Homeland Security issues. He and his wife are small business owners. In Olympia, his first-hand knowledge will benefit all the people in the Valley who own and operate small businesses.

Can you name your current state legislators or name one thing they accomplished for you in the 2004 legislative session? If not, take a close look at these three exceptionally well qualified Democratic candidates this year and give them your vote. They are winners!
