Letter: Dog owner loves country life, appreciates leash laws too

To our community dog owners;

My husband and I moved to Fall City about a year and a half ago. We love the country, the scenery, the people and local destinations.

Shortly after our move, we adopted our Shih Tzu mix puppy, Josie. Josie loves taking walks, regardless of the weather, and so do we. We have discovered a few routes off the beaten path and main road, past farms, nice homes and mountain backdrops.

The greatest challenge for me has been to feel safe from other dogs that run out of their yards into the road after me. Admittedly we are lucky to have a nice fenced yard for Josie to roam and feel free; but when we are out of that boundary with her, we have her safely on a short leash. To me, this is responsible pet ownership, and even more so if you have a dog that likes to chase after and bark at people that walk by.

We understand their territorial and protective behavior, but this should be contained within a safe and secure yard or on a leash so that people like us that enjoy a daily walk in this beautiful country, do not feel threatened. Thanks to all of you who are responsible pet owners. It is very much appreciated!
