Search teams last weekend recovered the body of a woman who died on Snoqualmie Pass’s Red Mountain.

An experienced backcountry skier, the woman was reported missing on Wednesday, Feb. 2. King County Sheriff’s personnel suspect she was killed when a ledge of snow collapsed beneath her.

“She fell with the snow and was likely buried,” Sheriff’s Spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart told the Record by e-mail.

Rescue and mountaineering groups searched Wednesday afternoon until dark, and part of Thursday morning, but the search was called off by 11 a.m. Thursday because freezing temperatures made search conditions dangerous.

On Wednesday afternoon, searchers in the sheriff’s Guardian One helicopter saw ski gear and what appeared to be fresh snow slide activity off the back side of Red Mountain, near Alpental.

The search area was concentrated around Red Mountain. Also on Wednesday afternoon, another skier found the missing woman’s backpack and a glove, and notified the sheriff’s office.
