North Bend residents will be asked in April for their opinions on a potential change in police services for the city.

The city currently has a contract with the King County Sheriff’s Office for police services, as well as the sheriff’s substation located on Boalch Avenue, but for financial reasons, is considering a proposal to share police services with the city of Snoqualmie. Shared services could save $280,000 to $400,000 for each year of the five-year contract. City Administrator Duncan Wilson said the potential savings are the main reason the city is considering the change.

“We haven’t had a problem with police services,” he said.

At a March 13 workshop, the council discussed the change and decided to call for public input on the question. The public comment session is tentatively set for Tuesday, April 17, during the council’s regular meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Mount Si Senior Center.

The council must also decide whether to give the county the full 18 months advance notice of a cancelation. If they do, the soonest citizens would see a change is January of 2014.
