Mount Si students named to ‘hate list’ on social media; police believe there was no real threat

According to police and school officials, the students involved in threats against Mount Si High School have been contacted and no one has been injured in an incident that began on Thursday, Jan. 7.

According to police and school officials, the students involved in creating a “hate list” of Mount Si High School students on social media have been contacted and no one was injured in an incident that began on Thursday, Jan. 7.

Mount Si High School Principal John Belcher wrote in a message sent to parents Friday afternoon that some students may been the subject of threats made on social media. School officials did not specify how they learned of the threats, but said they found out Thursday that a list of students referred to as a “hate list” or hit list” was seen on Snapchat, an image-sharing mobile app. The school then contacted police and immediately started the investigation.

During their investigation, police contacted the students who reportedly created the list and their parents. The students have been expelled. Police believe was no risk to students.

School district Public Information Office Carolyn Malcolm said police havecontacted all of the people who appeared on the list to inform them of the situation.

Police Capt. Nick Almquist said the investigation is continuing; there have been no arrests.

Mount Si High School is hosting an E-Safety Parent Night, starting at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 11 at Mount Si High School auditorium. Stephanie Thomas, community outreach coordinator for the Seattle Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force will give the presentation. She will discuss cyberbullying, social networking, texting and driving, and cell phone and internet safety tips. There will also be a period for audience questions.

“She provides some resources and parental control information and lets parents ask her questions, which is really great.” Malcolm said.
