At 10:58 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 61-year-old Fall City resident Edward Samuel Monkley was hit and killed by a Greyhound bus along Interstate 90 at Exit 20 near High Point. He died at the scene.

Next of kin has been notified.

The Washington State Patrol reported that alcohol was involved but declined to elaborate, noting that details are still under investigation at this time.

Monkley was traveling westbound in the far right lane on I-90 in his 1998 Volkswagen. He reportedly parked his vehicle in that lane and crossed into the next lane to retrieve a dog. State patrol was unable to confirm if the animal was his.

Also traveling westbound in the same lane was 56-year-old Greyhound bus driver Gary Howard from Olympia, who was driving the bus en route from Spokane to Seattle. Howard changed lanes to avoid hitting the parked vehicle and hit Monkley, who was reportedly dressed in dark clothing.

No one on the bus reported injuries.

There was $5,000 in the damage charged to the Greyhound Bus Line for a vehicle tow. Washington State Patrol was unable to comment on the status of the dog, though unofficial reports suggest that the dog died at the scene.

The accident shut down westbound lanes of I-90 for about three hours on Sunday night. The case is still under investigation.
