Carnation was 'island'

Carnation rode out the flooding of the Tolt and Snoqualmie rivers last week with little flooding within city limits. The city was isolated Tuesday, Nov. 7, with flood waters closing all road access to the city. Mayor Bill Paulsen declared a state of emergency. Most roads were opened by Nov. 8
Carnation City Manager Candice Bock said much of the credit for the positive response goes to citizens who were prepared for an emergency, took necessary precautions and avoided trying to cross flooded areas.
The Carnation-Duvall Citizen Corps Community Emergency Response Team helped Eastside Fire and Rescue (EFR) and the Carnation-Duvall Police Department personnel to distribute information around the community. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints set up an emergency shelter, which two used.
Deputy City Clerk Becky Buelna credited the area's speedy recovery to the foresight of its founders. Carnation is only a mile wide and the area within city limits sits on higher ground.
"Somebody in 1912 was pretty smart," she said.
Though Carnation became an island, much of the surrounding area was inundated, said chief Lee Soptich of EFR. Several feet of water could be found in numerous homes and some people had to be evacuated, he said.
