Goodbye, grange?

Sallal Grange, a 77-year-old Valley service organization, will cease operations by the end of 2007 if big changes aren't made this year.

The grange's handful of active members have asked Washington State Grange leadership for permission to surrender their charter, citing a lack of participation by the community.

Sallal Grange has struggled due to a lack of active members for the past several years. Longtime leaders of the local grange are worn out, and recently voted to disband after the Kiwanis Giving Tree Program, in which the grange is involved, wraps up in December.
