'Artful' ordinance wins council approval

SNOQUALMIE - The Snoqualmie City Council unanimously passed an ordinance at its Monday, Oct. 14, meeting that would set aside 1 percent of the total costs of the construction of any public structure to purchase art.

Under the ordinance, total construction costs must be no less than $100,000, and no more than $50,000 can be spent on the art itself.

The ordinance also states no more than $75,000 can remain after a project or sit unused from previous projects.

Projects will be reviewed by the city's Arts Commission and submitted to the City Council for approval.

Arts Commission Chairwoman Gloria McNeely said the ordinance was important because it specifically sets aside money that could be overlooked in discussions about funding works of art.

"If the money is not approached with an ordinance, it can get lost in arguments between people," she said.
