Hunters discover body of murdered woman
October 2, 2008 · Updated 1:06 PM
NORTH BEND - A long-running joke among hunters about finding a dead body in the woods came true for three local men when they stumbled upon the corpse of a Tacoma woman stuffed in a recycling container near Exit 38.
"When you spend as much time as we do out there, everybody jokes around about it, but you hope it never really happens," said Shawn Halavin, one of the three men who made the discovery Nov. 18.
Halavin, Alex Rodriguez and Jerry Goin were on one of their many bear-hunting expeditions along a forest-service road about three miles from Interstate 90 when they stumbled upon a blue recycling container which had been tied shut. The group, not expecting the worst, decided to investigate.
"We stopped and went over," Halavin said. "Alex stepped out, checked it out and said it was heavy."
