Mayor Simpson deems D.C. trip a success

NORTH BEND - Mayor Joan Simpson may be serving the final months of her tenure, but she's definitely not suffering from short-timers' syndrome.
Last month Simpson was part of group of more than 3,000 municipal government officials from around the country that converged on Washington D.C. in an effort to build a stronger federal-local partnership. Officials and lawmakers met to discuss a number of issues, including stimulating the economy and investing in the future of the country's children. The event was sponsored by the National League of Cities.
"Cities and towns need to maintain a strong voice in our nation's capital, especially in light of the economic downturns and new threats of terrorism," said National League of Cities President John DeStefano Jr. "We are now the front lines of defense and need to be able to not only guard against terrorism, but continue to meet the everyday needs of our citizens."
