NORTH BEND - In an effort to maintain the current level of service and ensure that Fire District 38 has the proper funding for the next five years, the district's commissioners will ask voters to raise the annual levy fee by more than 60 cents next month.

Facing a $170,000 shortfall for basic services next year, the commissioners for the district, which is part of a consortium of departments known as Eastside Fire and Rescue (EFR), approved a levy lid for the Sept. 16 ballot last month that would find residents increasing the current rate of 83 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation to $1.50. For the owner of property worth $250,000, that equates to just under $14 a month in 2004.

The last time a levy lift was approved was in 1990, previous to that it was 1980.
