North Bend teen published in national writing contest
Budding author Alex Rudd, a sophomore at Mount Si High School, has had her latest work published after winning a national contest sponsored by Half Price Books.
After hearing about the contest last spring from her language arts teacher, Rudd went home that night and wrote her story.
"The theme of the contest was a children's bedtime story," Rudd said. "I remembered how much fun I had reading those magical stories ... I wanted to write something that promoted literacy by sharing the joy a good story can bring to a reader."
Her short story, entitled "My Adventures," was chosen for publication in the Half Price Books Bedtime Story Contest after several rounds of judging. Her story is one of 20 chosen from more than 3,000 entries for inclusion in the 13th edition of "Say Good Night to Illiteracy," a full-color, hardback book filled with illustrated short stories from writers across America. Proceeds from sales benefit the National Center for Family Literacy, which aims to break the cycle of illiteracy that still affects more than 30 million Americans.
