John Belcher named KingCo's 'Distinguished Principal of the Year'
Mount Si High School Principal John H. Belcher has been named the KingCo League Distinguished Principal of the Year. The award, presented by the Washington Association of Secondary School Principals (WASSP), recognizes principals with deep commitments to students, academic excellence and positive school-community relations.
"In the past year and a half since John came on board here in the Snoqualmie Valley School District, there have been several significant initiatives and positive developments that expand upon past successes and many achievements at Mount Si High School," said Superintendent Joel Aune. "He brings tremendous energy, a strong focus on student voice, tireless commitment to raising achievement, and pervasive PRIDE for all things Mount Si."
Criteria for the award, based on WASSP's principal responsibilities and leadership needs, are: Willingness to take risks to improve student learning; anticipates emerging issues/problems and effectively acts to address them; offers clear examples of action to implement goals and objectives; commitment to fostering a positive school climate; community involvement in the life of the school; creativity and imagination in bringing about positive change.
Belcher joined the Snoqualmie Valley School District in July of 2011 as the head principal of Mount Si High School. He was the principal at Omak High School for seven years prior, during which he earned his superintendent certification. He also served in the Northshore School District for nine years as an assistant principal and science teacher.
"Mr. Belcher is a joy to work with. He listens and collaborates on all we do in PTSA. As a parent, I appreciate his accessibility and responsiveness - his door is always open," said Cathy Renner, PTSA co-president for Mount Si High School.
As a League Principal of the Year, Belcher may be considered for the Washington State High School Principal of the Year recognition.
Last year, Mount Si High School's Associate Principal Greg Hart was selected as the KingCo League's 2011-12 Distinguished Assistant Principal of the Year.
The Snoqualmie Valley School District serves more than 6,000 students in ten schools, in the communities of Fall City, North Bend and Snoqualmie. For more information, visit www.svsd410.org.
