Valley voters have the option to renew an expiring tax levy in the Aug. 16 primary election. Proposition 1 for renewing the Veterans and Human Services Levy, would maintain a levy of 5 cents per $1,000 of property value for six years, starting in 2012, if approved.

The cost of the levy would be $15 annually, for an owner of a $300,000 home.

Half of the levy would be dedicated to funding veterans services, such as housing, transportation, employment training and treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. The other half would be designated for services to other people and families in need.

In succeeding years, the levy could be increased up to 1 percent, or by the consumer price index. Voters initially approved the levy in 2005.
