No Turkey Day without the bird: Mount Si food bank seeks poultry donations
Turkey Day is not the same without a golden, steaming slice of the namesake bird.
That's why the Mount Si Helping Hand Food Bank is looking for turkey donations this week and next, helping to ensure that needy Valley residents have a heartier holiday.
Food Bank Manager Heidi Dukich said 200 birds are needed for next week's pick-up day. Turkeys can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 22 and 23, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24.
The Helping Hand Food Bank serves about 1,200 residents weekly, including more than 400 children and 200 seniors.
Many families who rely on the food bank may have had a Thanksgiving meal in past years, but "this year, they might be in a difficult position to put that together," Dukich said. "There are people who are in-between times."
Donations "allow people to experience grace and kindness from our community," she said.
The food bank is also planning a similar drive for Christmas. Most needed items also include canned meats, fruits and vegetables, packaged foods and household goods.
