Sign Initiative 26, not some party oath
Oct 03 2008, 3:07 AM What frustrates you at the ballot box?

Whether on the Eastside or in downtown Seattle, many voters expressed anger when they were forced to sign a partisan oath or attend a partisan caucus in order for their views to matter in last month’s election. This should not surprise the political parties or our elected officials. Washington’s political culture is fiercely independent. We are a conscientious and well-informed electorate that takes our democratic responsibilities seriously. We do not like being told who we can or cannot vote for.

Cooking up a thank-you
On her last night in the United States, Taeka Shimozaki prepares a meal for the Valley families that have hosted her and 19 other Japanese students who spent two weeks visiting Mount Si High School on a language exchange program. The teenagers from the city of Iwade prepared Japanese pancakes, skewered dumplings with sweet bean paste, garnished sushi and strawberry dessert dumplings using many ingredients they’d brought from their home country. They also treated their hosts to performances of traditional and popular dances, as well as a ritualized tea ceremony. Program coordinator Carmen Villanueva said the exchange benefits host families and gives Valley students the chance to visit Mount Si’s sister school, Naga High. - Denise Miller / Snoqualmie Valley Record Oct 02 2008, 6:23 PM On her last night in the United States, Taeka Shimozaki prepares a meal for the Valley families that have hosted her and 19 other Japanese students who spent two weeks visiting Mount Si High School on a language...

Marissa Busby, the team’s sweeper, and stopper Alexis Greer led a fierce defensive line-up. The team worked on ball control, marking goal side and distributing the ball to the outside midfielders. The girls’ willingness to try new things, work hard during practice, maneuver as one organism during games, communicate on the field, and support one another made the season a success.

A solar system of her own
Beth Hungerpiller, a first-grade student at Cascade View Elementary School, hefts the gas giant Saturn, part of a solar system of planets she made and displayed at the school’s art, science and spelling night, Friday, March 28. Hungerpiller enjoyed creating Saturn’s rings, and said Jupiter was the most challenging, because she didn’t want the colors to mix together too much. The science project was fun, because “I don’t get to paint a lot,” she said. - Seth Truscott / Snoqualmie Valley Record Oct 02 2008, 6:22 PM
Paper airplane experiment
Cascade View Elementary School student Reid Lutz shows off the classic form of the paper airplane. He and teammates explored which paper airplane would fly best — the original, old-fashioned version or a newer, fancier one — and found that the classic flied farthest. - Seth Truscott / Snoqualmie Valley Record Oct 02 2008, 6:22 PM
We’re looking for people who make an impact
Oct 03 2008, 3:07 AM We started a new feature in the Valley Record called “Citizen of the Week,” co-sponsored by Replicator Graphics. This is an effort to recognize those individuals who give their time, money, wisdom, etc, to various causes in the Valley. Maybe they volunteer at the senior center or on a city commission. Maybe they mentor a high school student or take care of a grandparent. Too many times, small acts of kindness or extra effort don’t get recognized. This is your chance to share a special person with the rest of the Valley.
