Tanner Jeans Bike Rodeo teams up with National Night Out for Aug. 1 community event

This year, the Tanner Jeans Memorial Bicycle Safety Rodeo will be combined with National Night Out for an evening of safety and fun, starting at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Snoqualmie Valley YMCA and Cascade View Elementary School in Snoqualmie.

Participants can access the event from either the school or the YMCA.

The event is hosted by the Snoqualmie Police Department and the Tanner Jeans Memorial Foundation.

The bicycle safety rodeo is in memory of 7-year-old Tanner Jeans of Snoqualmie who was killed in a bicycle accident in 2004. The event, for kids ages 3 to 14, strives to keep every child safe through bicycle education. Parents, bring your children’s bikes and helmets.

National Night Out is a nationwide initiative designed to bring communities together to create safer, better places to live.

Activities will include:

• Bike safety instruction and obstacle courses wit Snoqualmie and Seattle Police, and Washington State Patrol. The Tanner Jeans Foundation will give T-shirts to those who finish the course;

• A scavenger hunt by Compass Outdoor Adventures, with prizes by Scott’s Dairy Freeze;

• Bike inspections by Single Track Cycle;

• Helmet inspections and replacements for those that don’t pass inspection;

• Bounce houses, face painting, and water activities;

• Free hot dogs, snacks, and beverages.

Representatives from the Snoqualmie Police Department, Snoqualmie Police Explorers, Snoqualmie Fire Department, Snoqualmie Parks and Public Works Department, Washington State Patrol, King County Search and Rescue, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, Snoqualmie Community Emergency Response Team, and Shield Driving School, will be part of the event, along with vendors of safety and security-related products.
