Sallal Grange’s next Contra Dance is 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at the Grange and Community Hall.
The evening starts with a meal of hearty vegetable soup and rustic bread, at 6:30 p.m.
Musicians will play waltzes before the dance, and dance leader, Tim Noonan, gives waltz lessons between 7 and 7:30 p.m.
Contra dancing and waltzing follows from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
• Steve Barnhart, 12, helped his three sisters escape from a blazing house near Duvall. Their parents were out, the mother having car trouble on her way to pick up their father, a cab driver. A faulty oil heater caused the blaze, at around 2 a.m. Steve escaped out the back door, then instructed 11-year-old Karen to help 10-year-old Lydia and six-year-old Debra out of their bedroom window, then jump herself.
Valley Center Stage is auditioning actors for its upcoming production “Over the River and Through the Woods” by Joe DiPietro, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Billed as “a comedy with a lot of heart,” the show has a cast that includes: Nick, a young man; Caitlin, a young woman mid to 20’s, early 30’s; Frank, Nunzio, Emma and Aida, all grandparents in their 60’s or 70’s.

• The winner of Mount Si Village’s recent beard- growing contest is Gary Furulie of Snoqualmie. He and his wife, Kathy, won a night’s stay at the Salidh Lodge, plus dinner and breakfast. The couple will use the occasion to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary in early February.
There was much rejoicing, merriment and mirth as Teyani Whitman married Johann Sasynuik of Fall City on Friday, Nov. 15, (also the 13th day of the 10th month of the Year of the Yin Water Snake) at the Preston Community Center, Preston.
• Arrangements are complete for a banquet at Si View Hall in North Bend to honor Mr. and Mrs. Harry Morgan Jr. and Mrs. Fred W. Hayes. Morgan, present manager at the Cascade Branch of Weyerhaeuser Company, is leaving January 1 for Tacoma, where he has been promoted to manager of Weyerhaeuser Manufacturing Operations. Hayes is his successor.
• In North Bend, library and street improvements will be voted on in a special election in March.

• Three teens arrested in North Bend last week may be guilty of about 50 burglaries and thefts over the past two months. Det. Thad Frampton of the King County Police said most incidents involve theft of ornaments from cars and trucks in Riverbend and at MC Anderson Trucking.
