Out of the Past: Redistricting moves North Bend, Snoqualmie and Fall City to 5th Legislative District, Frances North considers run for Senate seat

The following stories happened this week, 25 and 50 years ago, as reported in the Snoqualmie Valley Record. From the Record’s archives:

Thursday, Jan. 9, 1992

Three legislative seats for the new 5th District will be open for election this fall, and Frances North of North Bend may try for the Senate position. North Bend, Snoqualmie and part of Fall City will be shifted from the 45th District to the 5th District created by the Redistricting Commission on New Year’s Eve. Carnation and Duvall remain in the 45th. The citizen panel worked right up to the New Year’s deadline to come up with the new district’s – both legislative and congressional – reconfigured to equalize population based on the 1990 census.

Local Salvation Army representative Herman Schodde and Kiwanis President Dick Balsiger presented a check for $3,686.71 to Denny Strand, the Army’s field director for this region. The money was raised in this season’s Holiday bell-ringing campaign organized by the Snoqualmie Valley Kiwanis Club, with help from the North Bend Masonic Lodge and Cub Scout Pack 466.

Thursday, Jan. 12, 1967

The Preston Community Club, which organized a special committee to protest the closure of the Preston school, ordered by the Issaquah School Board last November, Monday night conceded a loss of round one in their fight. About 25 members of the Preston community were on hand when the board, on a motion by Don Johnson and second by Don Meredith, voted unanimously to stand by their decision which closed the school at the beginning of the Thanksgiving vacation.

With the consolidation of the Sno-Valley and Northlake Courts into the North-East District Court which became effective Jan. 9, a new rule for filing civil cases has been established by Judges Thomas B. Russell and Carolyn Dimmick. All civil cases from now on will be filed in the Kirkland office of the new Court. Trials in North Bend will available, but only upon request by either party.
