Out of the Past: Police flush felon from hiding place under riverfront deck; Nellie Johnson breaks state juniors record in barrel racing

The following stories happened this week, 25 and 50 years ago, as reported in the Snoqualmie Valley Record. From the Record’s archives:

Thursday, July 30, 1992

• A convicted felon eluded state and King County police officers for more than 2-1/2 hours July 24, as police and a dog attempted to flush him out of his hiding place near the Cascade Golf Course. A King County police dog located the man, Marty J. Johnson, 29, Tacoma, at about 6 p.m., hiding under the deck of a South Fork Snoqualmie riverside chalet. A Washington State Patrol officer had attempted to pull Johnson over after determining he was speeding along Interstate 90 eastbound, ear exit 31 at 3:25 p.m., but Johnson, driving a stolen black Jeep Cherokee, fled, turning at Cedar Falls Road and driving onto the golf course before running from the car toward the river.

• When 21-year-old Troy Woodward walked onto the pitcher’s mound July 12 to represent the semi-pro Everett Merchants, he had no idea what was in store for him, but felt like having a good time. The left-handed senior relief pitcher, who plays for the University of Washington and hails from Fall City, hadn’t stepped on a ball field in two months and didn’t expect too much. So when he pitched a no-hitter in the second game of a Western International League baseball double-header against Coquitlam, he was quite surprised.

• A 12-year-old Preston girl broke the state record for juniors in the Texas barrel race at the Western Games Show at North Bend arena last Sunday. Nellie Johnson wheeled her mare, Jody, around the triangular course in 14.46 seconds. Previous record, riding club officials said, was 15.09 and two-thirds for a junior.

• Winners in the Seattle Women’s Public Links Championship, held at Mount Si Golf Course last week were Mrs. Harold Bryan, first place, and Mrs. Robert Corey, runner-up. Mrs. Bryan, who plays out of the Wayne Golf Club, scored a 78 in the 36-hole final; Mrs. Corey, of the Tyee Golf Club, carded an 84.
