Out of the Past: Hang gliding championships to be set on Mount Si; North Bend man to race in drag-racing championships

The following stories happened this week, 25 and 50 years ago, as reported in the Snoqualmie Valley Record. From the Record’s archives:

Thursday, Jan. 30, 1992

• Hang gliders may soon find their way back to the top of Mount Si — and then down again to land in a pasture belonging to the Norman Brook Farm. Davis Straub of the Cloud Base Country Club said his group has two goals in mind: To hold the Twin Peaks National Hang Gliding Aerobatic Championships in the Valley this summer; and to use Mount Si throughout the flying season.

• On Feb. 15, Jim and Frances North will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, at the church hall of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Snoqualmie. The Harley Brumbaugh Quintet will provide music.

• On Jan. 23, 18 students from grades 4 and 5 at Opstad Elementary School participated in the Easter Seals Basketball Shootout. Students each had one minute to score as many layups as they could in the fundraiser. High scorer was Jessica Raisio, who made 25 successful shots in 60 seconds.

• Charlotte Noel hopes her lyrics will be a hit in Nashville, where Rainbow Records used two of her songs on tapes to be released this holiday season. The Fall City woman figures that selling words in the lucrative music industry will make it possible to publish her books of poetry and short stories.

Thursday, Feb. 2 1967

• Harden O. McCaffree, lumber grader at Weyerhaeuser’s Snoqualmie Falls operation, retired Jan. 31. McCaffree started at Snoqualmie Falls in April, 1935; his continuous employment totaled more than 31 years of service. His prior service was in 1918 and 1919. He and his wife, Pauline, live at Fall City.

• Bruce Kimball of North Bend, in his Porsche-powered Fiat Bianchina will participate in the Ponoma, Calif., “Winternational” Drag Racing Championships this weekend.

• Army Specialist Fifth Class, James M. Barry, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. David D. Barry, Route 1, North Bend, arrived in Vietnam with the 9th Administration Company. The unit is part of the 9th Infantry Division and was formerly stationed at Ft. Riley, Kan. Spec. Barry, a clerk, entered the Army in July 1965.
