Letter: Why did Rep. Reichert vote against forcing President Trump to release tax records?

The Ways and Means Committee voted not to force President Trump to release his tax returns. Huffington Post said that 74 percent of Americans want them released. Congressman Reichert voted “No” to this proposal. Does he represent his constituency?

People want to know how President Trump can be a billionaire and pay nothing in taxes. He bragged about it during the debates. We want to see if profits from business in Russia sheds light on the controversy over their interference in our election.

Partisan politics may have beckoned Congressman Reichert to vote against his constituency. If a Republican had initiated the vote, would he have voted differently? Huffington Post said 52 percent of Republicans want President Trump’s taxes revealed.

This president broke promises, including releasing his taxes. He is eliminating transparency in government. He gagged communications in the EPA and National Parks. He refused to answer questions of reputable journalists. His administration was inconsistent with facts regarding Mike Flynn. They stated that disagreeing with the President is “bad for democracy.” In fact, freedom of speech and governmental transparency are essential for democracy.

This President looks like he has something to hide. And Congressman Reichert votes in lock-step with him.

Congressman Reichert should courageously stand up to the way Trump’s administration is destabilizing our government, removing checks and balances, and misinforming the public.

Congressman Reichert should vote to preserve our system of government and represent the will of his people.
